Can I also say “dimentico spegnere la luce”, instead of “mi dimentico di…”?
Or should it really be an reflexive verb in this situation?

Ciao Corinne,
you can also say “Dimentico sempre di spegnere la luce” (remember to use “di” after “mi dimentico” and “dimentico”). Maybe it’s more common to use the reflexive version though. 😉
