Is “che prendeva” a way to say “while he was taking?” I’m not familiar with the format che + imperfect like this. Interesting. Could I also say, “mentre stava prendendo?”
–Sorry for so many questions! Italian grammar is not easy….
“Che” è un “pronome relativo” (come in inglese “who”, “that”) e si riferisce al signor Furfanti – “Il signor Furfanti che prendeva…” = “Il signor Furfanti il quale prendeva…” (Mr. Furfanti who was taking…”.
In questo caso, comunque, come hai detto anche tu, il significato è lo stesso se diciamo “…trovano il signor Furfanti mentre prendeva…” (anche questa frase è corretta)
