In short, we usually use the same auxiliary verb (essere or avere) that we use with the main verb, so for example:
– mangiare in the past is: “ho mangiato” – so I will say: “Ho potuto mangiare.”
– andare in the past is: “sono andato” – so I will say: “Sono potuto andare.”
